Wendy van der Wauw: design
This application presents data on the CO2 emission reductions one can achieve by changing personal day-to-day behavior in and around the house and in traveling. The challenge is to achieve a concrete reduction of 4000 kilograms per person per year (the equivalent of an elephant’s weight), a promise the Dutch government made internationally for 2030, but which is still far from realized. People can try to reach this goal by clicking on objects in the house, which then shows and adds up their choices and will tell them when they have succeeded.
What makes this project innovative?
Instead of simply presenting the data, we invite the readers to play a game which will let them experience what really counts.
What was the impact of your project? How did you measure it?
We usually measure the impact by the number of page views and time spent on the page. This project got tens of thousands of page views within a view days after publication. Also, an environmental organisation asked to reproduce it on their website for educational purposes.
Source and methodology
We obtained the data from Milieucentraal, a government-sponsored organisation.
