Project Description
We filed a FOIA request and obtained a dataset from the police consisting of 96000 data points at street level resolution of people fined for drunk driving in the period 2014-2017. A combination of static infographics and an interactive map reveal when and where most people were caught and how the police is changing her strategy from large-scale checkpoints to mobile brigades.
What makes this project innovative?
We acquired a unique, high-resolution data set which we make accessible for a broad audience of newspaper readers.
What was the impact of your project? How did you measure it?
We usually measure the impact by the number of page views and the time spent on the page. This project got some twenty thousand unique page views within a day after publication.
Source and methodology
We filed a FOIA request with the police and analyzed the data in a variety of charting and mapping tools (Excel, javascript, DeckGL). A reporter joined one of the police alchol brigades and talked to experts.
